You load up your favourite aircraft and it’s completely pink – checkerboard pattern, no textures. It looks ridiculous and it’s one of the most common issues in MSFS 2024. Here’s exactly what causes it and how to fix it.
1. Clear the rolling cache
Go to General Options → Data → Rolling Cache → Delete, then set the size back to 8–16 GB and re-enable it. This fixes most one-off texture failures, especially on scenery and ground textures.
2. Clear the scenery index cache
Navigate to the following folder and delete its contents – MSFS will rebuild it automatically on next launch (takes 2–5 minutes):

This is the most likely culprit. Sites like flightsim.to and other freeware repositories still host thousands of liveries built for MSFS 2020. If you downloaded one recently and didn’t check the compatibility notes, there’s a very good chance that’s your pink aircraft.
MSFS 2020 liveries use an older texture compression format (BC1/BC3) that MSFS 2024 can’t render correctly – hence the pink checkerboard. The fix is straightforward: go back to where you downloaded the livery, check whether the author has released a 2024-compatible version, and if not, remove it from your Community folder. Many popular liveries have since been updated, but plenty haven’t.
As a general rule: always filter for MSFS 2024 when downloading from flightsim.to or similar sites. The “works with 2020” tag is not a guarantee of compatibility with 2024.
4. Verify your install
In the MSFS 2024 launcher go to Options → General → Check for Updates and run a full content scan. Corrupt or partial downloads cause texture failures on stock aircraft too.
5. Isolate Community folder conflicts
Move everything out of your Community folder and test the aircraft. If the pink is gone, add items back one by one to identify the conflict. A mismatched livery pack is the number one cause of pink checkerboard on stock aircraft in MSFS 2024.
A380X note: The A380X has known texture issues with certain third-party liveries post-Sim Update 5. Check the developer’s Discord or forum thread before spending time troubleshooting – it may be a known bug awaiting a patch.
