What it is: In simming, ATC can mean the simulator’s built-in controller, a third-party add-on, or a human-run online network. Its job is to manage your route, altitude changes, runway use and separation so the flight follows realistic procedures rather than simply going direct from take-off to landing.
In practice: During a typical flight, you’ll use ATC for IFR clearance, taxi instructions, departure, en-route hand-offs, approach vectors or STARs, and landing clearance. That affects which runway you use, when you climb or descend, and how you join the arrival. If you fly VFR, ATC may be used more lightly for traffic services or airspace entry. In a simulator, the quality of ATC varies a lot: some systems are basic and mechanical, while others handle phraseology, traffic flow and route changes more convincingly. Following ATC properly usually means matching your filed flight plan, tuning the right frequency and reading back key instructions.

- Built-in ATC often has limitations with realistic routing, altitude assignments and traffic handling, especially on complex IFR flights.
- Online ATC networks use real people, so accurate phraseology, charts and proper radio discipline matter much more than with offline systems.
